It looks like the site has nothing on this! I wish it did I like the idea of running a open-source firmware on a zune that would be SWEET! - Anonymous Zune Enthusiast

Zune Progress

well being that the zune is in majority a slightly modified Toshiba Gigabeat S 30GB unit with wifi and FM radio (HD RADIO SUPPORT), the work on the Gigabeat S should be closely watched... and Rockbox is skinnable which would make its interface possibly look and act like the Zune interface. The progress for the Gigabeat S can be found here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatSInfo and definite promise in this jpg: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/GigabeatSInfo?rev=1;filename=hello-world-gigabeats.jpg
It just occurred to me that with the given wifi daughterboard and the 532Mhz ARM11 based CPU... why not some form of torrent app on it? (not for today but in the not too distant future?) - Anonymous Zune owner

I like the interface of the zune. I just wished it was drag and drop for my good quality MPEG-4s. - Ctown

RockBox rocks!

Yes indeed, this looked really interesting and promising. RockBox has been proven to be the right alternative on other portable players.
I'll never buy a Zune as long as RockBox isn't developped on it. - Sam~

swsp. Dude all over the zunes dev pages and all over microsoft are articles discribing the full functionality of the zune. they also said that they cant have all the features in the initial releases because people are too f$%king stupid and would end up tripping over all of them and end up talking a bunch more s#$t than they already do now. Cheers! - Zac

Talk about backward irony

It's funny, because ROCKbox can offer up a multitude of things which M$ would never want their customers to know existed, or get a hold of. While on the other hand, the only real thing(s) which the Zune has going for it is the (crippled) wi-fi support and its really beautiful GUI.

The irony here is spending money on an M$ product, and losing one out of two of the features you bought it for. You'd now have half cocked GUI's (not really a slate at the WPS creators, they do a great job with what resources they have available to them) and who knows really, if/when the various people who code, will get the wi-fi up and running without the crutches.

It's a great step foward in terms of consumer awareness, if ROCKbox gets good exposure, but I'd still much rather see manufacturers putting out DAP's which directly handled said tasks. - swsp

I would be so thankful if the rockbox does get ported to the zune(that or a vers of linux, it is capable of running linux)
As much quality as m$ puts into their software, probably this would be a better alternative. I may try to lend a hand in some way though i have many things going on right now and am not technical enough for programming but would like to further the project.
If this does go through i will be very thankful to those at rockbox! - bak3donh1gh
