How can we proceed moving forward ?
I understand that the 2 most famous persons involved with the Zune Linux port (Steven Biars and Mys Vidal) have not released any code (in whatever level of quality) for reasons that are private to them. I don't want to discuss nor speculate on those reasons. If anyone knows them and has a chance to convince them to release even just a "disk dump", that would provide with a huge head start to get things moving again.
In the meantime, I'd suggest that we gather and categorize all bits of information we have:
- what hardware should be considered: HW version (manufacturing date, serial number, ... ?). will Zune2.0 be considered at first ? or should be Zune 1.0 be simply dismissed from the start ? - what HW hacking tools are available ? (reconstructed schematics, debug ports, modding, ...) - what firmware can be "hacked" through ? (version, release date) how can it be hacked though ? (yeah I know, it is indeed a tough one) - what kernel configuration can then be tried out ? (which drivers to include, which ones are missing, ...)
Please add and comment that list. If we have to re-start this effort from scratch (it sounds like it, so far) we really need some systematic approach to gather as much data as we can.
Happy hacking!

Nice post, frasc! We really need to get the zune-linux community together get on with the project.
I am an absolute newbie myself, and doubt I can be of real assistance.
But I would like to learn and to help anyway I can.
Good luck!

Mys Videl is not any more part of the project, as far as I know.

a starting point is there: http://www.bunniestudios.com/wordpress/?p=131the next thing to look up is really how to load any kind of software that can take control over the unit.

Any news on the project at all?...wondering myself why this project is still being kept between a small group of people...?
On another note...I was wondering (if there was a way to get it) if the zune could handle the Microsoft Mobile OS?
cheers

probably, the zune firmware and windows mobile both use the winCE kernel.

Come on, give us an update. Anything. Even "we are still not even close" would be fine. We just want to know something!

the kernel is done we continue to strugle on loading it on to the device each device uses a different boot loader as you could tell when you upgraded ur zune by going to settings-> about->zune you can see your zunes bootloader number
p.s. sorry about the lack of updates life caught up with me)

Yeah, thanks for the update. Sounds good. If I could be of any help let me know. I program in a couple of languages. Never delt with boot loaders but I'm a quick learner.
