Firmware v2.1.4 for Wifi downloading? Print E-mail
Written by Kostas Tzounopoulos
Thursday, 10 May 2007
Zune 2.0 logo (unofficial)Engadget has posted two photos from an anonymous source showing a Zune Firmware v1.4 (v2.1.4 ?) beta, featuring Wifi downloads. This means Zune may not need a computer and Zune Software in the future and connect by itself on Wireless Hotspots directly to the Zune Marketplace. EDIT1: Gizmodo claims Zune 2 to be released on June 1st. EDIT2: Engadget posted two more photos...

Reading on Engadget :

Apparently you'll finally be able to put your WiFi to good use (other than being a part of "the social") by using open WiFi hotspots (no word on WiFi you have the key for) and Microsoft points for downloading tracks. (Sorry, no word about subscriptions, syncing, and the like.)

Here are two (blur) photos showing ...whatever. (I suppose its a Zune downloading a purchased track from the Marketplace).

EDIT1: Gizmodo says:

These photos claim to show a first-gen Zune running a firmware 2.14 that can purchase and download tracks over Wi-Fi with Microsoft points. They come from the same friendly Zune source that sent us the first photos of Zune 2.0 that some readers thought were Photoshopped. I can't tell if this is merely a first-gen Zune showing just an image of a firmware/download screen, or the true thing. What do you think?

The same email the photos came in says that the Flash and Zune 2 will be announced within the month. The only lead I have to kinda confirm this is a report sent to me of a conversation between an unnamed high ranking Microsoft employee to our other source a month ago, with the quote, "if you like Zune, you'll love us on June 1st".

But click on for another photo, and part of the email exchange I had revealing the June 1 date. But remember, this is all rumor.

Add that to the private preview of the Zune Flash and 2.0 that went on this week, as reported by friends at iLounge, and you can tell that people are hungry for some revision.

[...]

...she mentions she is at work and then i ask where she works, she openly says that she she works for Microsoft and we just started talking about the zune and we even talked about the new colors coming out, then she asks me how i like it, and even asked me what i would like to see different about it, i told her, and she replied with, "well if you like
that then you're going to love June 1st." i kinda just laugh and asked why, she replied with, Microsoft has some "BIG" plans for that day, she wouldn't go into too much detail with me about it other than it was closely related with the zune and that it is supposed to be "BIG" i wasn't able to resolve her reason for calling today, and she had a meeting to go to she said it was actually about advertisements for whatever it was that they had brewing up

EDIT2: Engadget posted two more photos:

[...] here's a couple more shots. Apparently WiFi syncing still isn't in the cards, but the source that sent these along notes that WiFi encryption will work, as will subscription, but you can't send it to another player until you sync back to your PC.

I hope I can get some deal for the new Zune considering I only bought the current version about a month ago.

I highly doubt they would include those kinds of features on the Zune 2.0 and NOT add them to first-gen Zunes in the firmware update.

How can we be sure 2.1.4 is 1.4 and not an actual firmware 2.1.4? I mean I doubted this from the beggining companies dont usually make large software jumps like that most likley it will either come slowley or with the next gen of hardware (not because it needs the hardware but they will profit if you buy another zune) I do believe the Current Zune Hardware release will eventually have a firmware update at somepoint that will allow marketplace downloads... I doubt it will be that great though probably very plain and very restricted (and expensive per song download) and overall a pain to use. That's just my forecast on this whole thing though. personally a wifi marketplace wouldnt be that great to me I would rather have 1. A rotating screen (like in the itouch/iphone when you turn it? 2. A click wheel once again a brilliant use by apple not so much by Microsoft 3. Bigger HD Capacity the Ipod "classic" now has 160 gigs and still isnt bigger than the zune? just saw it in the store the other day.. as for battery life i love the battery life and i also love the screen size.... i really prefer the hardware requirements over the software though i think they need to deal with touching up the hardware and looks before they start looking at smaller details like Wifi download... simply because i would use features such as click wheel and screen flip every time i use the zune... marketplace i would use maybe once or twice a day? Sorry for the long speach though.. Anyone else have any opinions on what should be added or taken from the zune? i'd like to hear everyones ideas.
