Making Zune Support Asian Languages

EDIT:  Untested with Zune Software/Firmware v2

As you may know Zune doesn't support Asian languages like Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Sheme, a member of the ZuneBoards community, showed us it can be done and its trivial: you have to copy the font files on Zune. Yes just that and Microsoft hasn't fixed it all this time since the Zune release. Read the details below. EDIT: A Software-Only solution is now available...

Although this is easy for Microsoft to implement, its not easy for the normal user. The removal of the Zune's disk is needed because Microsoft's security features don't allow direct access to the Zune's system partition on the hard-disk. So currently is needed the direct connection of the hard disk to a computer using a zif-socket adapter.

Before you go any further than this you'd like to know that opening your Zune will void its warranty. If its OK with you, here is a video from a previous post on how to upgrade your Zune's hard drive . It will show you how to open the Zune and access the hard-disk. Additionally you will need a zif-socket adapter for your computer.

Here is how Scheme describes the process:

0. Disassemble the zune and connect its harddisk to computer. (cause we do not have a hack method to access the system parition yet )

1. make the folder named "Fonts" under the system patition's root directory

2. Put font files (msgothic.ttc gulim.ttc mingliu.ttc simsun.ttc) into the folder.

and these file could be found under the %systemroot%\fonts on your windows machine. (If some of file is missing, install the east asian language pack to your windows)

3. assembling zune and turn it on. The zune will be support unicode character.

Yeah, actually I'm korean. For that reason, my english s**ks

 Making Zune support Asian Languages

I'd really like an answer on why Microsoft hasn't supported these languanges all these months? And its not only Asian languages. Greek tracks and artists I have, are visible on Zune's listings but not when the track plays !

Read more on this ZuneBoards thread.

EDIT (September 10th): Scheme has posted about this mod in his blog (Korean only). You can use Babelfish to automatically translate it to English. Here is also the Software-Only solution.  Read also the new posting in English about it: Software only Asian Languages Hack
