Microsoft signed an agreement with Universal music in an attempt to get between music suppliers and Apple. In this novel approach Microsoft will give revenue to Universal from Zune sales...
Getting revenue for hardware sales (Zune in our case) music industry could make up for the damage from sharing music with friends piracy. Microsoft seeks a way to get support from as many music suppliers as possible. Giving revenue from Zune sales (not only music) may be the way more companies could trust a somewhat more free sharing scheme than the current "3 days or 3 plays". The general manager of global marketing for Microsoft, Chris Stephenson, has said that Microsoft is pursuing similar deals with other record companies besides Universal. It must be an interesting preposition for others also, especially because it can be seen as a way to limit Apple's dominance in the market. I really hope this Microsoft move could lead to a more open sharing model. A "30 days 30 plays" would be more than enough!
