Review: Free DVD to Zune prog Print E-mail
Written by Kostas Tzounopoulos

eRightSofteRightSoft claims to have the free encoder of your dreams. Its name is SUPER and this says it all: "SUPER © does for FREE what other encoders CAN'T do for money". It supports DVD (vob), avi, 3gp, wmv , iPod (h.264, aac) and more. See how you can convert your DVDs to Zune supported video...

You can download "SUPER" from the eRightSoft's website here.

When you install it (very easy, next -> next -> [...] done!) and run it change its configuration as we have in the screenshot below.

eRightSoft SUPER

If you want you can change the video bitrate (Bitrate kbps in SUPER) to more or less than us. The same goes for the Sound.

Then right click somewhere on the program and select "Add Multimedia File(s)". The following dialog appears. Get in your DVD drive, in the directory VIDEO_TS. Click on the  right up icon in there and select "detals". Then select the the "team" which has the largest VOB files. In the screenshot this "team" is "VTS_01_". (I didn't select the "0" just the others).

eRightSoft SUPER

You can see the video files added in the program. Just press "Encode (Active Job-List Files)" and select for a directory to save the encoded wmv files. You can then sync them to your Zune.

There is cactch here. Many DVDs are encoded but DVD Jon got the solution some years ago (a teenager  then). Its out of the purpose of this article to learn how to break this encryption, but I'll give you a Hint: dvddecrypter. Come on, its easier than you may think!

We'll be back on this program and definetely on DVD Jon. He is still in the "business".

(Thanks for the tip Nuria)

Works fine, but makes huge files
written by Stan, January 15, 2008
I tried out Super and while it does do what it advertises, it makes huge, ungainly files. With the recommended settings, a 22 minute episode of The Office, originally about 1.2 GB on the DVD, translated to a Zune-ready file that was about 1.4 GB.

I ended up downloading and buying another product, by Cucusoft, that makes the same episode into a file about 110 KB in size.

Stan, you must be using the program wrong. I easily encoded 'The Bourne Ultimatum' from 5 GB to 500 MB using Super. I've also done 300 from about 6 GB to 600 MB.

All you have to do is select the 'Zune' predefined settings on Super. Set the video aspect depending on your original dvd, 320x240 for 4:3 or 320x180 for 16:9. Then pick somewhere around 500 kbps bitrate, and set the audio anywhere from 64-128 kbps. Also make sure to set the FPS to about the same as the original media. Most DVDs will be 29.97.

Next just right click and add the .VOB files that you presumably DVD decrypted (it won't work otherwise) and start encoding. After its done, if you are doing a full movie, I suggest opening up Movie Maker, and placing all the new files together in one larger file. That way you don't have to pick 5 videos to watch a whole movie.

Also, 1.2 GB to 110 KB is impossible. The video quality would by absurdly terrible. I wouldn't want to watch the Office without being to see Jim's funny looks at the camera!
