I came across an interesting media player, SongBird. It is a mix of media player and web browser, trying to mix these both worlds. It runs on Windows / Mac / Linux and has support for the iPod but not for Zune...
SongBird is opensource, based on Mozilla the Firefox browser engine and can play media as normal music players do. But its power is the extension of this capability to the web. The way it sees web pages is like playlists for audio and video. When on one with compatible media, a list appears at the bottom which allows the user to play or download them. It also offers the choice of subscribing to pages for later re-use. Its list of features: - iPod support (Win / Mac / Linux)
- USB mass storage devices support (Win / Mac / Linux)
- iTunes FairPlay DRM playback (Win / Mac)
- iTunes library import (Win / Mac)
- Windows Media PlaysForSure DRM playback (Win)
- WikiPedia (for artists information) (Win / Mac / Linux)
- Last.FM for scrobbling your statistics (Win / Mac / Linux)
and more. Don't you think we should see some of these features on Zune Software soon?
Visit SongBird's nest and watch a screencast describing its main features. SongBird is currently in Beta status, so it may be unstable. (And when I say "may", I mean it is unstable!). Thanks Petros for the tip.
