Microsoft after leaving behind the PlaysForSure DRM system, announced in Barcelona a new mobile DRM. Its name will be PlayReady and will support many platforms (mobile and non-mobile) and file types even not belonging to Microsoft. Its misson will be to protect video, audio but also ringtones and java games and apps from piracy...
In Monday Microsoft announced in Barcelona, Spain, while on the 3GSM conference its new DRM system. The user will be creating a "domain" in which he will be adding his mobile and non-mobile devices. When he buys a DRM protected file he will be able to use it in his registered devices. The interesting part about PlayReady is his file and platform agnostic nature. It can be used with any file type on any platform! Because PlayReady is based on Windows Media DRM 10, device compatible with PFS will also support it. Zune also uses WM-DRM 10 but because currently is an end-to-end approach, they will be probably incompatible with each other but keep in mind that Zune MarketPlace tracks can be played on PFS players (the reverse is not possible). So it may be semi-compatible with Zune or Zune MarketPlace. We'll find out in the future as more info becomes available. External articles: crave of C|Net Wired magazine Jason Wellcome, on Wired mag
