Update: Zune 80 GB Print E-mail
Written by Kostas Tzounopoulos

iPodMods didt it. They found the way to put back together Zune with 80 GB disk. They had to remove a metal plate and the back panel could be placed on Zune again...

After doing something like the following, you should know the warranty of your Zune is invalid.

Zune 80 GB
Step 1

Take the new 60GB or 80GB drive and remove the metal plate label. Use your fingernail to pop the label side off of the drive. There are 2 sticker spots holding this on so it will not come off too easily.

Step 2

After the label plate is removed we are ready to connect the new drive inside the Zune. We may also mail the new drive to you without this plate to make it a bit easier.

Zune 80 GB
Step 3

We will NOT reuse the hard drive cage when installing a 60GB or 80GB drive. the drive is too large and we cannot close the case if we install the new drive using the metal drive cage. for the 40GB drive you can simply use the above guide as everything will be reused because it is the exact same size as the 30GB drive. You should cut your old drive pads to fit 2 of them on the new drive as pictured. you cannot use too much or the drive will not fit properly. You should also reuse the old battery enclosure so the battery is seated properly. Now just reassemble the Zune and you have a ton more storage.

Case

Cant you just simply create a back case for the Zune? Wouldn't that be an easier solution?

iPodMods did it!
written by Zune-Online.com, December 01, 2006
The guys at iPodMods found that if they remove a metallic plate from the hard disk the case can close again without problem. (I don't know if this plate removal can cause any problems to the hard disk or not). Check thier website.

Hard Disks
written by Zune-Online.com, December 13, 2006
These hard disks are 1,8" , not the same used for laptops. Toshiba announced a 100 GB also, but I'm not currently sure if it is compatible with Zune.

Compatible Drives?
written by budderduck, June 20, 2007
If the Zune uses any 1.8" hard drives then you could by an Apricorn Mini and take the drive out of it:

@budderduck : I am not sure if these 2 are compatible drives. Zune needs a 1.8" hard drive with zif socket.

What can you tell me about this problem when using Windows XP 2002 version, the Zune software and device will have many problems on your computer, although on the box it says that you only need an XP or Vista. The technical support member told me that "unfortunately, Microsoft has overlooked the fact that XP 2002 SP2 users will not be able to use it without problems and we would need Media Center 2005 edition." Great, but I already bought the device based on the information on the website and on the box, on which it does not say this. They gave me a 1-866 number to call (Microsoft XP update support) and told me to try to persuade the guys there to give me an update to Windows Media Center 2005! Sounds ridiculous? There is more. After I talked to the technical support team at Windows XP for half an hour, I got even more ridiculous suggestions. They basically told me that they would not give me an update for free and they tried to sell me the Windows XP Media Center edition. So, you need to be aware that if you are using XP 2002 edition with SP2, you will get an unprecedented tragicomedy from Microsoft. I am also very confident that most other users with newer operating systems have considerable number of problems with the software, which can be confirmed by checking out Zune forums.

Please give me some feedback on this.

Thank you

Doesn't the new blank disk need to be formatted? My real question: Is there some way to re-format the hard drive without replacing it?
