What Bill Gates said last night Print E-mail

Bill Gates and J Allard yesterday on Zune 2 AnnouncementSeattle PI has posted a transcript of some of yesterday's Bill Gates' statements on the Zune 2 event. Bill mentions connected entertainment and the power of software and cloud services for music, videos and games. He was also surprised that everything in the Zune team went by the schedule he learned about back in June...

From Seattle PI

"We think the same kind of thing, in terms of persistence and innovation, can apply in this connected entertainment area. When we think about videos and games and music, you've got to be great at each of those individually and you've got to create a great overall experience."

In a broader sense, Gates put the Zune initiative in the context of the company's "connected entertainment" plans. More excerpts:

"What software has done is pretty amazing, and yet, I'd say, in almost every way, and particularly in terms of music, video and games, software is just at the very beginning. In some ways we've changed the medium, from a record or a CD, to being digital. But we haven't really changed the way you discover, the way you share with other people. The things that you can do in terms of learning about the artists. We're just at the beginning."
"There will be a change here away from being just device-centric, or media-centric, to being user-centric. The opportunity is that, wherever you go, you get in your car, your music is there. You go to your house, your music is there. You go to your friend's house, the music is there. So games, video, music, you shouldn't have to worry about, you know, where are my rights or anything like that. It all just should magically happen for you. And certainly the Internet together with software will let us be able to deliver on that."
"The products you're going to see today are a huge step in that direction. ... I got to come out in June, see the work they were doing, and I got very enthused about it. Very impressed that the schedules they told me about then are the schedules that we're still on to get these products out this year. And really what they've done with the software. Particularly around the community and the music card, it's a phenomenal thing."
"We are very committed to this. I think you'll be thrilled by what we're doing this year, next year, the year after that. There's a long way to go to achieve the full vision. But really fun to see the milestones."
