Zune MarketShare 8.7% in February Print E-mail
Written by Kostas Tzounopoulos
Wednesday, 28 March 2007
A little lower than January, Zune's Marketshare on February was 8.7% among hard drive players according to NPD. Microsoft says it is still enough for the No 2 position after iPod and this 1% loss isn't something serious...

via Seattle P. I. :

I asked a Microsoft representative about the trend, and this was the response:

"At this point in the product lifecycle, we don't view month-to-month changes of around 1 percent to be significant in NPD data. You can look to NPD as the industry guide for numbers, but you should understand that NPD does not track all retail stores in the U.S. We're still in line with our expectations for this time period."

NPD data are not reliable
written by marble, April 06, 2007
From a good informative site:

Quote: That tells us that industry analysts know that NPD reports only a narrow slice of the market. If NPD only counts around a quarter of Apple’s iPod sales, does it also miss three quarters of the total number of Zunes sold, or is the Zune simply not selling as well in non-NPD channels? We can only guess.

NPD talks about Apple's 72.7% market share in relation to the 1.2 million music players sold in retail stores that NPD knows about. Since Apple really sells three times that many, what is Apple's real share? That seems hard to determine, as market share groups keep the most interesting details a secret, and only feed us headlines.

Known Unknowns: WMDs NPDs
We know that NPD only reports retail sales--no direct sales or online merchants--but it's not as clear how much of retail sales it knows about. It does not include Apple’s own retail stores, for example." unquote. More here: http://tinyurl.com/youzkn

Especially interesting is the graphic showing market share of a number of popular consumer devices, the Zune barely makes it a single pixel.

Go here for some interesting dirt about NPD's figures: http://tinyurl.com/32cbhb

Quote: NPD's Smoke and Mirror Market Share Numbers
The best sounding news about Zune sales came from NPD. It reported that the Zune had taken 10.2% of the market in December. That would represent a dramatic and impressive first showing, even if it only represented a rush of early adopters. In reality however, NPD's numbers were grossly misleading for a number of reasons.

Data Source: First, NPD only reports on subset of retailers, mostly big box stores. That section of the market would represent the majority of Zune sales, because Microsoft lacks major direct sales channels; it has no retail stores, nor does it operate a web store selling lots of Zunes." unquote.

NPD data
written by Zune-Online.com, April 06, 2007
NPD maybe is not a very good source of information, because they don't track all the retailers. But its the best source available and for sure it can be used to show if the Zune sales rise or drop and how much.
