It is possible to install Windows on a Virtual Machine inside Linux. Zune syncs (almost) normally with the Zune software. Read more to find out what I mean "almost" and watch the screenshot...
VMware is program which emulates a PC. This means you can install and run an operating system like Windows in Linux (or Linux in Windows if thats what you want). Its beyond the scope of this article to explain you how to do this, there is a lot of documentation online. What I meant by "almost" is that VMware supports USB 1.1 so the sync process is a bit slooowww. But beyond that you won't have any more problems if you pay attention to a tiny issue: If you have USB 2.0 (most PCs today) you have to unload the USB 2.0 driver from Linux before connecting Zune. If you don't do this the Blue Screen of Death will appear on Windows, inside VMware or it will just hang. This is how you do it from the console: sudo rmmod ehci_hcd . Of course if you have USB 1.1 on your PC you don't have to do this. This is a screenshot from Debian AMD64 Linux running Zune Software connected to my brown Zune on Windows XP 32 bit Pro SP2. (that was a long one!). Click on the image for full size screenshot.
If you think the folded Firefox is artistic creation, you are wrong. This is a normal screenshot! Magic added by compiz . But this is still on Windows. If you'd like to know more on how the projects to connect use Zune directly with Linux or Mac proceed check here . For problems you may have visit our Zune Forum. More info: Mac and Linux support for Zune.
