Apple has applied for a technic producing a Zune-like shell for electronic devices since August 2005. Apple already uses a similar technic with a clear plastic on top of white or black for iMac and iPods but the patent was granted today...
The method described in the patent, now granted to Apple, can produce a double case effect we find in Zune today. The drawings in it uses the first the first generation iPod shuffle shell but it was released using a normal one. Some images from the patent. Pages 1, 2 and 8:
